![]() You still have to deal with challenges such as switching floors, changing kitchen layouts and wind gusts, for example. It’s definitely something that the sequel doubles down on. Veterans of the original Overcooked, however, know that the game loves to up the ante by throwing all sorts of unexpected situations your way. The core experience still primarily relies on having players juggle multiple tasks in the kitchen, including food prep, cooking and dishwashing. Gameplay also will be familiar to fans of the original Overcooked, albeit with some added tweaks. All that being said, the addition of online multiplayer for Overcooked 2 remains a much welcome development overall.Īesthetics, meanwhile, retain the cute and charming presentation of the original but with improved visual polish. For a game that requires precision, the lag can make things pretty tough, especially during the game’s hairier sequences. Other times it gets so bad that there’s either a huge delay in your inputs or your character starts teleporting all over the place. Sometimes it’s minor lag that’s pretty easy to deal with. In Overcooked 2, however, my niece and I noticed that whoever isn’t hosting the session as part of a multiplayer match ends up experiencing laggy gameplay. In all that time, I only ever remember seeing bad lag maybe three or so times. I’ve logged in 700 hours playing Monster Hunter World, for example, including hundreds of hours spent playing online with other folks. As someone who avoids playing this game solo because I don’t like having to control two chefs by myself, the addition of online helps immensely by allowing me to pair up not just with my niece but random folks as well. Overcooked 2 fixes that by allowing you to play with friends or even randoms. This was especially true for me since the person I play the game with the most lives in a different state. For a game that thrives on the co-op experience, the lack of online multiplayer in the first game felt like a glaring omission. This also points to one of the best improvements added to Overcooked 2: online play. In my defense, I once did an investigative piece about restaurant inspections as a health reporter. I’d even say that it’s actually comforting to see her and her favorite avatar - the racoon in a wheelchair - deftly multitasking across the various rooms with aplomb as I ponder the meaning of life in a corner, wondering how a rodent chef such as my avatar is allowed in the kitchen. Playing with my cousins, however, made me look like Chef Hiroyuki Sakai from the Iron Chef Long-Gang Chicken battle against Alain Passard.Īs such, cooking with my niece (she gives this game an 8.7 out of 10, by the way), who has now become a much better player of this game than I am, is actually enjoyable. ![]() I mean, I’d describe my Overcooked skills as just being just OK. It was basically like being paired with people who were trying to cook with their feet, no offense to all the people of the world who cook with their feet and do a good job with it. When I tried recruiting three different cousins to play the first Overcooked game, though, they were - how do I put this nicely - irredeemably inept at it. That’s fine if you’re playing with competent people. Personally, I think it’s the most balanced experience as ramping up to three or the maximum four players also increases the score you need to get to succeed. To fully enjoy the Overcooked experience, you’ll want to take a stab at it with at least two players. On the plus side, my niece is actually good at this game. Time to take a few deep breaths, clear the old noggin and get ready for another marathon session of Overcooked’s delectably evil kitchen nightmares. “im reddy,” it said in that short, purposely misspelled way sans capitalization and punctuation that today’s younger generation apparently prefers. The weekend after we both got Overcooked 2 installed in our PlayStation 4 systems, however, I got a cryptic text early in the morning, no invitation or needling required. It’s funny given how I’ve been having a bit of a tough time lately trying to invite her for some online multiplayer sessions for various other games. Needless to say, my niece was absolutely overjoyed after she heard that Overcooked 2 was on the menu, so to speak. ![]() She loved it so much, we ended up finishing the story mode in one crazy marathon session. One of those people happens to be my niece, whom I introduced to the game last year after I brought over my Nintendo Switch with Overcooked: Special Edition installed. ![]() Thanks to its charming presentation, cute graphics and addicting take on multitasking, plenty of folks fell in love with Overcooked. Then again, straddling that fine line between stress and exhilaration is part of the magic that made the first game such an indie success story. ![]()
